We're always excited to work with researchers who share our vision of advancing human-AI systems.

Potential Collaborators

We're always open to new collaborations. If you're working on related research in machine learning, human-computer interaction, cognitive science, or design, we'd love to hear from you. Feel free to send us an email directly with a brief description of your work and potential collaboration ideas. We're particularly excited about interdisciplinary collaborations that might add a new perspective to what we do.

Prospective PhD Students

We encourage you to apply through the formal admissions process. Our lab admits PhD students through the Computer Science program. Please include a clear research statement that demonstrates your interest in our research areas, and mention our PI Nikhil Singh in your application.

While you are welcome to reach out directly, and we'll try to make time to chat, please note that direct contact doesn't provide an advantage during the application process. We aim to evaluate all applications fairly and thoroughly.

What we're looking for: Strong technical background in machine learning, HCI, or related fields. High agency and a taste for open-ended problems without clear existing scaffolding. Most importantly, we value intellectual curiosity, creativity, humility, and comfort with ambiguity. We seek students who want to combine technical depth with intellectual versatility.

Masters, Undergraduates

We welcome motivated students to join us. Our research follows more of a "jazz" than "chess" approach, in that we don't maintain pre-defined project lists, but rather work collaboratively to shape problems and solutions as we go.

Important: You won't be "helping out" on existing projects—you'll be taking ownership of part of the research. This requires self-direction, substantial time commitment, and willingness to engage with "productive ambiguity."

Please fill out our lab form with the following materials, unless we have already discussed your application in-person:

  • Current CV or resume
  • Brief statement of interest describing your interests and goals
  • Code samples or portfolio (if applicable and available)

Time commitment: We ask for a minimum commitment of two quarters and participation in weekly lab meetings. Research takes time to develop, and we want to ensure you have a meaningful experience that contributes to both your learning and our research goals.

Prerequisites: Depending on the project, you may need strong programming abilities (often Python), solid mathematical background, or experience with particular software stacks. We'll discuss specifics based on your interests and potential directions.

Visiting Researchers

Funding for visiting researchers is currently limited, but we always welcome interest from those who can support themselves through fellowships, exchange programs, or their home institutions. We encourage visiting students and researchers who want to collaborate with us on specific projects or explore new ideas in human-AI interaction.

Please send us an email with:

  • Current CV
  • Clear description of your research interests and how they align with our work
  • Proposed scope and timeline for your visit (typically 3-12 months)
  • Information about your funding situation

Postdocs

We're always interested in exceptional postdoctoral candidates who want to drive independent research within our lab's broader mission.

Email us directly with your CV, research statement, and 2-3 representative publications. We encourage early-career researchers to reach out even if we don't have current openings listed here, since strong candidates can help us secure funding for new positions. Prospective postdocs may also be interested in the Neukom Scholars program.

What we offer: Intellectual freedom to pursue your research vision, collaborative environment that values productive ambiguity, mentorship in career development, and support for fellowship applications.

Digital Arts

Welcome! My advising within the Digital Arts program is best suited for projects that deeply engage with research at the intersection of computation (AI/ML and HCI) and creative computing.

This is likely a good fit if your project involves:

  • Developing novel computational methods, tools, or interactive systems for creative expression that leverage AI/ML
  • Creating computationally-driven art where the work serves as research by proposing new algorithms, exploring generative model outputs, or investigating human creativity through the piece
  • Focusing on HCI aspects of digital art tools or creative AI systems
  • Using AI/ML techniques in ways that constitute research contributions to aesthetics, artistic control, or generation
  • General applied AI/HCI research with a design orientation

This may not be the best fit if: your primary goal is creating artistic statements using existing tools without significant research questions relevant to our broader research areas.

Industry Partnerships

We welcome partnerships with industry that align with our research mission and values.

If you are interested in research partnerships exploring human-AI interaction, internship programs for our students, sponsored research projects, or consulting on challenges your organization is facing, please feel free to contact us with a description of the collaboration you have in mind.

Location

We're located at Dartmouth College in beautiful Hanover, New Hampshire, with opportunities for both in-person and remote collaboration. If you're interested in visiting us, please reach out to discuss potential arrangements.
